Modeling Misconceptions

The concept of what a model should look like has changed drastically over the years. At one time, blue-eyed blondes were all the rage. Eventually the world came to appreciate glamorous brunettes, and eventually more attention turned to African-American models. Coveted jobs of magazine covers and editorial spreads are now, more often than not, being given to actors and a more eclectic group of models.

From the start of modeling industry supermodels were everywhere that you looked. They were larger than life - appearing on multiple magazine covers, on all the top designer runways, in high-profile ad campaigns. It seems that now  days  top supermodels are quickly being replaced by other, more off-beat models and, mostly, by actors. They are replacing the supermodels as the fashion icons of today. These girls make come as a rebellion from the “perfect” image of the latter-day Barbie-doll supermodel. The new models are quirky, fun, and different, in both looks and attitude. Many are not classically beautiful. It’s a reflection of fashion and its constant change.

In my view this change to the industry is a positive one when considering the amount of new talent seeking careers in the modeling industry. The change gives a lot more opportunity to young men and women whom at one point in time may have foreseen themselves shouting out to the world of modeling. We should keep in mind the world of fashion is constantly in flux. Fads and trends come and go not only in the clothing designs, but also in models and the media’s version of what is a “celebrity”. The celebrity status that the top models had in the day of the supermodel may never be duplicated, and the new models that are rising in the ranks are creating their own eras and making their own, distinct mark in the industry.

No longer do U.S.based manufacturers used plus size models only for showing their plus-size clothing lines. The bias against larger consumers and models pervasive in the fashion industry as far passed on. So much so that plus size models can be seen in high fashion ads and runways throughout the entire nation. Today’s top fashion magazines and advertising campaigns have depicted plus-size models as embodying a return to the voluptuous classic beauties of the past.

There are many misconceptions concerning the modeling and fashion industry. Most new talent may be unaware about the many changes that have taken place overtime. Passed opportunities which seemed unobtainable to so many now present themselves lucrative paths to obtaining and successful career as a fashion model. That is why proper representation and guidance is important for achieving your full potential. In my opinion, TRU Talent Management is a great place to start your endeavors.

Finding True Talent

Finding true talent that is ready for the world of modeling is not as hard as it sounds. True talent is hidden in many places including malls, grocery stores, behind a desk or walking across the street. No that street is not always in New York. At any moment a talent management company or modeling agency may find a true modeling or acting talent.

Not all of our favorite models or actors went to school to study and mold their craft. Many were discovered as a true talent while living their life not thinking about being approached by a talent management company.  A talent management or talent agency is always actively looking for the next big thing. That is their job. Being approached by a talent scout or talent management professional should not be a turn off. Really they are not going to approach just any one. A person approached by a talent management company has to have “it”. What that “it” is can vary.

Here are some key items a talent management company looks for when looking for new talent.

1. A distinct look. Exotic, tall, vibrant, or an international look.

2. A commercial look. Top brands need models that relate to the majority of their buyers.

3. A bright personality. A modeling agency focusing on entertainment needs personalities.

4. A strong presence. A strong presence that pulls attention to you is powerful.

5. A healthy look. Fit, beautiful hair or shining teeth are all a big plus in modeling and acting.

Finding a true talent in the masses takes time and work. They are not always going to walk into a talent management agency. Most big talents are discovered by a talent agency that sees something in them that the person may not of even know was there.

A current modeling talent with Tru Talent Management by the name of Anyela provided her insight into what it takes to become a model.

“I think in my perspective what it takes to be a good model is the learning ability and intelligence, self confidence, good organization skills, a healthy body and lots of get-up-and-go! Not everyone is born a model, they have to work for it and achieve that part of their career.  A model that is comfortable in setting goals and not afraid to go after them with an aggressive determination.

Attitude in a model is important as well to set them into a character of advertisement. They are to show many angles of different moods. In every shot they take they have to be in the mood to sell to the fashion industry, and to be a hit in the modeling media.

The model has the ability to represent them into a fashion icon when they are walking down the stage. They are changed into character a couple times a day. For every photo shoot they take they are put out there for an advertisement to represent a product and sell themselves and the merchandise.

A model is set to look good, he or she is determined to be fit and be healthy, to also be a role model for the rest of us who are watching. They’re a fashion icon that is moving around rotating roles and lifestyles. They represent high fashion, haute couture and even just a simple catalog. The truth is that without them we wouldn’t be able to see what we could look like in clothes or with other merchandise out there. Thanks to all the models out there they are beautiful in their ways and do their jobs that many of us wouldn’t be able to keep up with!”

Modeling – Anyone Can Do It

I am always amazed at how people really still believe that in order to get into modeling you have to be a raving beauty. I may be that way on TV but it is a lot different in the real world. IN the real world modeling comes in many shapes and forms and just about anyone with a desire to become a model can. True, the chances are you may not get rich and famous, but you might. One thing is for sure though, you will have fun and you definitely can make a good living.

Modeling is all about a state of mind and being comfortable in your own skin. No matter what you are modeling, you are playing a part. You are giving what you are wearing personality and that is what is important. Take it from me, you really don’t need any formal training to become a model, all you need is the right attitude. If you feel comfortable with yourself, then you have won half the battle. Strong personalities do well in modeling jobs and go a long way with their careers. I can spot a confident model from a mile away.

Modeling is not just about runway modeling for huge design houses either. You can model everything from lingerie to gloves. There is a huge market for modeling specific body parts. There are hand models, foot models, face models, ever fingernail models. There is definitely something for everyone no matter what you may think. Modeling is a great career no matter what type of modeling you get involved in. You shouldn’t be discouraged by the idea that all models have to be super thin or super beautiful. The world of modeling is also interested in real people as that is generally who the market is.

Modeling shouldn’t be looked at as an easy job though. Just like any profession modeling requires a lot of work and a long workday as well. But, if you are up to the task you can have a great time and it won’t even seem like work. If you are into the glamour of modeling, you can work hard to become rich and famous if you like, just don’t expect it to happen overnight. It takes a lot of dedication and a lot of hard work. Not everyone is a Heidi Klum. But, so what, it can still be fun.
